I'm in favor of school bus GPS systems. Not surprisingly, the drivers' union isn't. It's trying to intimidate the city council and it's threatened to strike if the units are installed. I think this is a great turn of events. Why, after the jump.
The city council, for its part, is holding up the union contract. That's excellent. It gives me hope for the city. Let the drivers strike. It'll take a few months to hire replacement (class-C licensed) drivers, and the city will have to pay private bus services to cover the routes in the interim, but the payoff will be worth it:
Yet another city union will realize that organized labor is not supposed to be a synonym for organized theft, and union jobs aren't lifetime contracts that allow the holders to demand their own choice of working conditions. In short, Boston can drive home its point that it won't be held in thrall to unions.
Triangle Shirtwaist was a long, damn time ago. We have labor laws now. Unions aren't what they used to be.
Now, they impede more than they achieve.

This sounds great and would love it to be implemented soon. I know it would make me rest easier.
