Criminals on the Jury - Any Guts in the D.A.?
A murder case in Boston ended in mistrial when it was discovered that several jurors had criminal records that they omitted from their juror questionnaires - will Suffolk County District Attorney Daniel Conley have the guts to charge these people with perjury? I predict not.
They should be charged. If convicted, they should go to jail. But community leaders will claim charging them would chill participation in the jury process and diminish the number of blacks on juries because, they'll claim, blacks are over-represented in the group of people with criminal records. DA Conley does not hold up well in the face of criticism from minority groups, so I think he'll fold.
Watch for his office to demur prosecution while they "investigate," then watch them let the issue die with a Friday afternoon press release about uncertain proof and the integrity of the jury process.
