Put Some Supplies in Your Car
This story almost makes me cry, and I want to be clear that I am not criticizing James Kim's efforts; he died trying to save his family the best way he could. But what the f*** were they doing trying to cross a mountain pass in the winter in a car without supplies?
Personally, I don't drive from Boston to Cape Cod in the winter without a parka and my car's winter kit (food, water, flares, lighters, rope and a knife, among other things). It's a tragedy. A stupid tragedy that shouldn't have happened.

In the offshore sailing community there's an expression:
"Always step UP into the life raft"
Don't bail out too soon. I can't tell you the number of times the coasties find a boat abandoned, swamped but floating, with the liferaft gone. The crew just vanishes.
They had shelter (the car), they had water (the snow). A car is much easier to spot than a person. You can go a long time without food if you have ample water (many weeks).
The woods in the winter can kill you quickly.
