Make The Thugs Show Their Faces

Why are accused murderers allowed to hide their faces in court?  What judge allows this?  I've always wondered.  Is there some principle of privacy law I've missed all these years, or are most of the jurists just too jaded to give a damn?

If I were a judge, you'd damn well show your face in my court.

Beater of the Week is Back!

Cimg2527Cimg2528After a winter-long absence, I'm resurrecting Beater of the Week.  (That particular word choice always takes me back to a game I played as boy - like I'm a 10th level cleric or something.)  Anyway, this offering is from Boston, an early 90's Acura Legend.  Too new to be a beater?  I don't think so.  Note the unrepaired hood, the rusted wheels and fenders, the paint condition and the more-or-less permanent dirt.  Anything can be a beater.  The keys are condition and frequency of use.

MIT Admissions Chief

The pressure on children to get into a good college is enormous - AP courses, jobs, volunteering, team sports, high grades, and good test scores are the minimum requirements.  Now, a voice of sanity in the process is silenced.  Self-silenced, to be sure, but let's not throw out the message with the messenger.

Corvette F430

Cimg2525It was a good night for blog fodder.  Passing the Armani Cafe on the way to dinner elsewhere, we saw an attractive car with a group around it, mostly valets.  My wife looked over and gave me the blog post.

"Look, a Corvette."

Volvo Versus Tree. Big Tree.

Cimg2521Walking to dinner in the Back Bay last night, we came across this accident.  No one was seriously hurt, but the Volvo's dead.  I didn't stick around.  I can tell you this much: someone swerved to avoid someone else, hit a tree, and screwed up Back Bay traffic for blocks.Cimg2522

Parking In Boston - Always A Danger

PorscheparkThe guy in the Porsche parked at the last meter by a fire hydrant - likely to keep his car as safe from parking dings as possible.  The guy in Jeep wedged into a non-spot in hopes of parking overnight without getting a hydrant ticket.  Or a resident sticker.

Arctic Silver 996 Carrera 2's are a dime a dozen so, no, that's not my car.  Yes, that's where my sympathies lie.

Patrick on Sex Education

If you read this blog, you know I didn't support Deval Patrick for Governor and I'm not impressed with his "work" so far.  But I'll give him his due.  This makes sense, in a way abstinence-only education never did.  It's patent that teens will be having sex, theocrats' fantasies notwithstanding.  They should be taught about the implications.

Toyota Over the Top

AvalonIt's official - at least by one measure - Toyota passed G.M. to take the top auto sales spot.  What strikes me is the difference in the vehicles.  Sure, the Toyota Avalon might as well be a Buick, but Toyota's cars are better.  How does G.M. manage to sell so many lousy cars in the first place?

It's a wonder it took Toyota this long.
