Ted

Soooo.... under this new system, the people who live in the City (with the current high rates and claims but drive less) would pay less and those in the burbs (where the rates and claims are lower but drive more) would pay more. Geee, any thoughts on where the Pols that came up with this idea live. And somehow, I doubt that the insurance Companies ( thoose long time campaign contributors) are going to loose any money.

BTW....Anytime a polititian says "reform the current system" remember to hold onto your wallet.

But I'm with you, it's time the state got out of the insurance regulation biz altogether and let the marketplace set the rates so we can all (or at least those of us step 9 drivers) get the good rates from the "cavemen's" company.

Bruce

Punishing the lower-income set for having the audacoty to buy a house in an area they can afford, even if it means driving a longer distance to where the jobs are.

Discounts for people who live in the Back Bay, work downtown, and can afford those $100,000 parking spots.

Who is the moron who farted this one out from between his ears?

New state motto:

Massachusetts - We can't to friggin' ANYTHING right!

jordi

All I know is that my insurance bill--in the middle of Boston--is significantly lower than it was last year in a state where insurance "competition" is all the rage. I should add that the average home price in said state is about 1/4 of what it is in the bay state. Competition is great, except when the number of competitors is so limited by economies of scale that effective collusion is possible. I'll gladly take some extra regulation with my 40% lower insurance bill, thanks.

carpundit

I take it you moved here from New York or New Jersey?

Racedriven

What a dumn idea this is...ted, your right, it's time the state got out of the insurance regulation biz altogether and let the marketplace set the rates.

We need more insurance companies competing for our business, Geico..Progressive..get the idea.

Why is Massachusetts in the insurance regulation biz anyway and for that matter, here's two more, the manatory state health insurance, it should be an option and how about more than one cable company per area, Our charter bill looks like our gasoline bill...jumpy.

See Yeah!

jordi

try North Carolina.

And I agree that the proposal unfairly taxes the less affluent exurbanites than those that live in the city. I say leave the system be. If you honestly think opening things up will eventually lead to lower rates, I've got a bridge in Brooklyn that's for sale. Over-regulation usually doesn't work. Here it does.

(If we wanted to talk about health insurance I could tell you about my family's 60k a year in co-payments--yes, 60k a year--despite TWO insurance policies. But that'll get me a lot more angry than any talk about car insurance).

carpundit

I really don't want to talk about health insurance.
I find Massachusetts auto rates to be higher than necessary and to be unfairly set based on the place of garaging. Miles driven is a much fairer basis to calculate rates. I'm also opposed to state-set pricing in general.

eeka

Yes, garaging location is stupid. Why base my rates on where my car sits in my driveway rather than where I drive it? It gets damaged while I'm driving it or while I've parked it at places other than my house. It doesn't get damaged in my driveway.

The stats for determining what the crime is like in a particular area are ridiculous too. They're by ZIP code. Not density of neighborhood or zoning of neighborhood. I now live in an all-residential low-density (for the city) mostly owner-occupied neighborhood. I'm not at all worried about my car here. I used to live in a higher-density neighborhood with a lot of bars and students and transient renters. I'd frequently get my antennas and wiper blades and things stolen. My insurance DOUBLED when I moved here. Just because the overall crime in this ZIP code is higher, even though the BPD data shows that the crime by precinct is a lot lower here than my old one.

MA does have low-mileage discounts, which I very much appreciate.

Tim

I toyed around getting insurance for the beemer in FL, since I keep it there for the winter anyways.

Guess what. All of these wonderful fucking geicos, progressive, etc, were like 2x higher than my local libery mutual policy.

Huh? Hows that possible I thought. Isn't like free market always better? I am still at loss here.

Then again, who owns geico? The richest man on the face of the planet. How'd he get that way? Well, for one thing not by making my insurance policies cheaper.

I hate to say it, but my vote to keep things as they are in the mass.

Tim

How about this one, Tim? We may have the same first name, but we've definitely got diametrically opposite opinions, here. I just got out of the military, served five years in Virginia Beach, VA, and had Geico as my insurance provider. I moved back to my home state of Mass. two months ago upon my end of enlistment. Since Geico doesn't offer insurance in Mass., I had to shop around for another company (not that there were many choices here, to begin with). The very best deal I could find was with Commerce Insurance, the leader in this state (small wonder why they would be in favor of maintaining the status quo). My annual premium for my 1999 Ford Escort nearly tripled, not just doubled, from just over $600 per year, to $1660. For what it's worth, I'm in Saugus, not downtown Boston. I expected my insurance to climb a bit, due to higher population density, thus a higher accident rate. Also, this state is notorious for bad roads, and worse drivers. Honestly, though, for my premium to increase nearly three-fold? I have never been in any sort of accident, so this turn of events has me flabbergasted. This state is in desperate need of auto insurance reform. I understand they only set caps on rates, not minimums, but with caps, the major players (Geico, Allstate, et al.) don't want to play ball here (and I don't entirely blame them), and as is, the bulk of the state's drivers are effectively subsidizing the worst drivers in the inner city. To me, at least, that's just plain wrong, and it should be, for you, too.

motor sport

I have to agree with Bruce, that it punishers lower income people who cannot afford to live in the city where they might work.
I also wouldn't want my insurance company knowing the amount of mileage I put on my car.
