That Burning Taxicab

Yesterday's fiery end to a Ford taxi was photographed by others, because I forgot my camera.  Perhaps expectedly, just two minutes after I realized I didn't have my camera, I saw a taxi with a burning dashboard on Cambridge Street near City Hall.  Actually, I smelled it first.  The distinct smell of electrical smoldering.  Then I saw it pulled over and the driver just sittin there, staring down at the passenger seat as if he were examining a map.  He was oblivious of the flames rising out of the instrument panel.  If I'd had a camera, I could show you.  But I didn't.  Instead, I ran over and opened the door.

The cab driver, an elderly man, seemed confused.  He wasn't moving out of his burning car.  I mean, who sits in a car when the entire dashboard is aflame?  Then he wouldn't move.  I yelled at him, pulled him, persuaded him to get out, which he did.

Safe on the sidewalk after calling Boston Fire, he kept wanting to walk over and stand right next to the cab.  If you've ever seen a car burn, you know that's a bad idea.  After a few minutes, he came to his senses and I was able to turn him over to a police officer, and go get my coffee.

Which is where I was going in the first place.  Without my camera.

Damn! Good job.

Gah! Good thing you were there. Ever since I learned about the bystander effect in Psych 101, I always rush up to help. Good for you for doing that. From the pictures, it looks like he wouldn't have made it had you not been there.

Seconded what Abby said...if someone doesn't go help, there's a good chance no one will. Good for you! You should get a medal or something.

Today was a loss. I just don't have anything to say. Not that it matters.

I haven't gotten much done , but it's not important. Not much on my mind lately. Today was a total loss, but so it goes.
