I am not a defense attorney; I will never be a defense attorney; I am not a defender of defense attorneys, some of whom are the sleaziest non-car salesmen you'll ever meet; but I am a defender of the Constitution, which requires the assistance of counsel be available to criminal defendants facing jail. (Yes, that was the longest-ever opening post sentence in this forum.) So I'm happy about this, even if it means cutting another program somewhere or even -forgive me- if it means raising taxes. Maybe now the lawyers can get back to work, and the criminals can get back to prison, where they belong.
Here's an easy way to pay for a public-defenders rate increase: Get rid of the interpreters (except for English sign-language interpreters, if such are used in the courts).
