Trouble was, stingrays aren't, or at least weren't, considered that dangerous. People scuba dive on that reef all the time. It sure didn't sound like he was doing his shtick at the time.
This is like some NASCAR driver surviving a firey wreck at a race only to be creamed by a soccer mom in a minivan on the way home. Not surprising that he would buy the farm in a car wreck, was it?
Yes and no, I suppose. When you spend that much time in close proximity to dangerous animals, those one-in-a-million odds start to add up in a hurry.
