I've beaten this to death, probably, but this came out today and I can't let it pass. We need to reform the paid detail system. How effective can a cop be at his job after working a detail all day? Three or four times a week? All year? Not effective at all.
Paid details are a waste of public money and an embarrassment to professional policing.
Just how many hours does a Lt need to "Work" to clear $240K? Just how close to the 90 hr a week limit is that? When I was 25 I may have been able to work a small number of 90 hour weeks in a row but it doesn't take too long before your effectiveness during any of those hours is completely in the crapper.
BTW did you see this story? http://www.boston.com/cars/news/articles/2007/02/19/15_million_for_a_car/
Looks like you got your wish.

If only the 350 cities and towns could find the same political will. We can break the back of the police unions here, if people don't chicken out.
