The Boston Police are not actually getting their own helicopter, as this article in the Boston Globe explains, but they will be flying in one. The State Police are supplying the helo, the fuel, and the pilot. This is a great deal for the city. There is a crime problem here, the helicopter can help, and the cost is borne by the whole state.
Boston police are already girding for criticism about noise and intrusion from city residents who are now accustomed to having copters whirring overhead only in the case of a manhunt or disaster.
Who would criticize? It's not as if they'll be setting it to hover over one house at a time. It's a great idea. My only concern was that the Troopers and the Boston cops inside the cockpit might kill each other, because the inter-agency rivalry has been known to boil over on occasion. But it seems everyone is playing nice, and that's to the benefit of the city.
Why should the taxpayers of a small Cape Cod town (me and a few others who hang out here) be paying to solve the crime problem of the residents of Boston?
Seems kind of socialistic to me.

At least you're in the same state, Erik. Menino's been blaming New Hampshire for Boston's "gun violence" for years now.
Also, I notice that with Mitt Romney out of the corner office, Menino seems more than happy to have the Staties helping out. Now that his man, Deval, can share in the credit, it's a great idea, by golly. Nothing like playing politics with people's lives.

Erik:
Given that the City of Boston generates far more revenue for the Commonwealth than it gets back, I'd say that residents of little welfare leech towns should be a little more circumspect in throwing out the "socialistic" label.

If only the 350 cities and towns could find the same political will. We can break the back of the police unions here, if people don't chicken out.
