Why Is That BMW 2002 So Damn Cheap?

Recently, a correspondent asked if I had any resources to help him price a BMW 1600 he was selling.  I didn't have much, but I sent a few links and included my opinion at no extra charge.  It got me wondering.  Why are the early sport-sedan BMW's so undervalued?  I mean, of course, the 1600, but also the 2002.  They can be had for a song in decent shape.  Excellent ones are well under $10,000, and if you want a sporty, tinker-with-it-yourself weekend car, you'd be hard-pressed to do better.

By comparison, the Alfas of the era are much more expensive, with really good ones getting into the 20's, retail at least.  Why?

BMWs do not age well. They have bad reliablity problems and the parts are expensive. I think they are overpriced than underpriced.

Shawn's observations could just as easily be applied to Alfas. But the Alfas that are contemporaries of the 2002 just flat look nicer. I've owned two Fiats, two Alfas, three Audis and a Porsche. The Fiats and Alfas always seemed more eager and responsive, although objectively thats not true. Different user interface design criteria I guess.

I think that Shawn may have little experience with BMW 2002s.

The BMW 2002 may be underpriced at the moment because of lack of flamboyant styling. Meaning: there aren't too many people in America thinking, "I remember those when I was a kid!" like they do with `57 Chevys. In keeping with the company's aesthetic views, the 2002 held subtle style cues. Some find these to be very graceful and refined. Other just see a boxy car.

If you ever own a 2002 or 1600 (same body/chassis with a 1.6L motor), you'll find that there are a number of reliable parts sources, certainly more than one would expect for such a specific car. BMW's Mobile Tradition department is currently (and has been for a few years now) revamping it's parts line to supply owners of older BMWs, including the 2002. They even built a "new" 1973 2002tii with off-the-shelf parts for promotional purposes. There are very few parts that one can't find new or in good, used condition for an acceptable price.

To answer your question a little more specifically, BMW 2002s and 1600s are rising in price. 1600 models are actually more expensive because of their rarity. The average cost of a BMW 2002 in good condition has risen in the last ten years from $3000 to $6-7000. This is both good and bad. If they get over $10K for a nice driver like older, American cars, then the average American won't be able to buy them. As they are undervalued now, we can afford and enjoy them.
